Music Mondays: O Come to the Altar by Elevation Church

Continuing my theme of worship music Mondays, I’ve selected Elevation Worship’s O Come to the Altar (mp3 available for $1.29 on Amazon) for this week’s edition.

I like the journey from death to life in this song and how salvation unfolds in a person’s life. For instance, notice the first verse deals with the weight and conviction of sin. It paints the imagery of the woman at the well’s encounter with Jesus, the Living Water (John 4). The chorus invites people to respond to God’s invitation and receive forgiveness which was extended through the sacrifice and blood of His Son. The second verse highlights the joy that comes to believers as they experience new life as new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17). The last verse is a powerful reminder that though we deny ourselves and follow Christ, we do so to receive a prize. Our good works of righteousness have an eternal investment–that’s a potent return on investment! And the natural outpouring of experiencing salvation is to tell others of the “treasure we’ve found.”

The worship team at Agape chapel service here in Korea recently played this song during the invitation and response time after the message. This moment is clearly the best time to sing the song and invite people to make a decision to surrender to Christ and make Him Lord of their lives.

Are you hurting and broken within?
Overwhelmed by the weight of your sin?
Jesus is calling
Have you come to the end of yourself
Do you thirst for a drink from the well?
Jesus is calling

O come to the altar
The Father’s arms are open wide
Forgiveness was bought with
The precious blood of Jesus Christ

Leave behind your regrets and mistakes
Come today there’s no reason to wait
Jesus is calling
Bring your sorrows and trade them for joy
From the ashes a new life is born
Jesus is calling

O come to the altar
The Father’s arms are open wide
Forgiveness was bought with
The precious blood of Jesus Christ

O come to the altar
The Father’s arms are open wide
Forgiveness was bought with
The precious blood of Jesus Christ

Oh what a savior
Isn’t He wonderful?
Sing hallelujah, Christ is risen
Bow down before Him
For He is Lord of all
Sing Hallelujah, Christ is risen

Oh what a savior
Isn’t He wonderful?
Sing hallelujah, Christ is risen
Bow down before Him
For He is Lord of all
Sing Hallelujah, Christ is risen

O come to the altar
The Father’s arms are open wide
Forgiveness was bought with
The precious blood of Jesus Christ

O come to the altar
The Father’s arms are open wide
Forgiveness was bought with
The precious blood of Jesus Christ

Bear your cross as you wait for the crown
Tell the world of the treasure you found
