During this corona virus pandemic, I’ve been drawn to the song and lyrics of “Symphony” by Switch. Is there a symphony of peace in the madness of corona virus? Absolutely yes–but the reality is not everyone hears it. God is orchestrating a symphony of peace for His people who call on His name.
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your graciousness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6 Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-7
The Apostle Paul, under the influence of the Holy Spirit, delivers this directive to the Philippian church. He is suffering in prison. Yet his message for them is to rejoice. Why? Their spiritual father is in prison? Though our circumstances can be painful and anxiety-producing, we need to remember God is at work. He is near His people, and we aren’t to worry. Instead we rejoice in His faithfulness and bring our anxieties, needs, and requests to him in prayer. God may not answer our prayers the way we think best, but He is faithful to deliver peace to His people. His faithful presence and unsurpassing peace guards our hearts and minds, because Jesus earned it for us on the cross. We begin to hear the symphony of all things working together for good (Romans 8:28), and our eyes are opened to see events through the lens of God’s bigger plan. Further, we don’t lose heart to fear. That is what Paul means when he says the peace of God guards our hearts and minds.
If we obediently bring our fears and requests to God, He is faithful to deliver His peace. He invites us into the symphony of peace that He is conducting even in the midst of a broken, messed-up, chaotic world where we abide. Yet, we who live by faith, abide in His presence, and in His presence there is peace. Wat we ultimately need in life–whatever the circumstances–is the presence of the Prince of Peace.
For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)
